haven't been around much lately

sorry guys that i havent been around too much lately. it's been a rough month. i work in the real estate industry, and ive had this giant project that has been taking up all of my time the past few weeks. it ends this friday (hopefully well) and then ill be back to my normal postings.

guilty pleasure: fresh meat

This is the latest in MTV's series of survivor-esque game shows that involve former castmembers of past Road Rules and Real World seasons. The difference this time around: Road Rulers and Real Worlders are teamed with people who have never been involved in an MTV series (hence the "fresh meat") and are forced to compete against one another.

With some of the most choice competition veterans including Coral, Tonya, Derrick, and Theo returning, the cast of this game show also boasts four of the cast members from the Real World: Austin season - the two couples of Danny & Melinda, and Wes & Johanna.

Competition was fierce on this inaugural episode with two best friends Danny and Wes being sent into exile with their teammates to compete with one another in order to determine who stays another week and who goes home.

I'm a sucka for anything MTV, and I love all of the Real World/Road Rules challenges (gauntlet, inferno, etc.). This latest edition of the family does not look like it will dissapoint.

Fresh Meat airs Monday nights on MTV @ 10:00 PM EST.

memorial day weekend

i usually spend memorial day weekend down the shore in Ocean City, New Jersey, but I'm not making it down there this year - which is kind of depressing. It figures though: normally when I go down for memorial day weekend, it rains; however, this weekend looks like it will be pretty nice. Oh well. I'm looking to a well-deserved (at least in my opinion) day off from the world of real estate on monday. Can't beat a three day weekend AND i got paid on friday, which makes it even more sweet.

It is widely reported that the phrase originated at Stony Stratford ('the jewel of Milton Keynes'), Buckinghamshire, England. Visitors to Milton Keynes might feel the bar for 'jewel' status is set rather low in that region, although Stony Stratford is indeed a rather pleasant town. Coaches between London and Birmingham changed horses in the town at two of the main coaching inns - the Cock and the Bull. The banter of the rival groups of travellers, from England's two largest cities, resulted in exaggerated and fanciful stories. The story is plausible but there's no real evidence to support it, although the two hostelries did, and still do, exist. Don't mention this in Stony Stratford if you want to get out alive, but it's more likely that the phrase comes from old folk tales that featured magical animals. The French term "coq-a-l'ane" has the same meaning. This was later taken up in Scots as "cockalayne", again with the same meaning. The first citation in English is from Robert Burton's 'The anatomy of melancholy', 1621:

About a month ago I was bar hopping in Manayunk with a bunch of college friends who live in the area, and a few that had come to town from Baltimore and New York. We had a fucking blast at Kildare's, and as usual ended the night at Flat Rock completely blitzed.

Anyways, after last call, we split up into two groups to get into two cars. while we're on the way back to my place in the one car we get this frantic phone call from one of my buddies to come back to Main Street. We pull up and i see two of my buddies completely bloody. Apparently, some drunk dude hopped up on some controlled substance decided to punch the first thing he saw coming out of the bar - which just so happened to be my one friend's face. so my one buddy hits the ground, and when my other buddy steps to the guy to give him shit one of the crazy guy's friends whacks him in the back of the head as the other dude hits him in the face.

this all happens in the course of 25 seconds, and then the cops show up as the dude and his friends are taking off. the cops hunt the crazy kid down, beat the crap out of him and throw him in the back of a paddy wagon. turns out one of them had seen the whole thing go down, but couldn't respond immediately cause he needed some backup.

the crazy part was that this all happened on a well lit, heavily travelled roadway at like 2:30 am when there were tons of drunk people on the street. anyways, i spent the night at Roxborough Memorial Hospital with my buddies til about 4 am and then had to go to the northwest philadelphia central booking for the police department. didn't get out of there til about 7am after giving statements.
